WAIC Stories: Devi’s Story

7-year-old Devi lost both her parents in 2013 and was admitted in a Child Care Institution (CCI aka shelter) by her grandmother.

She stayed in the CCI for 10 years, invisible, and without any visits from her relatives.

In September 2023, Purender from the WAIC team visited the CCI and identified Devi as eligible for adoption. Initially the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) refused to support the case, stating that the grandmother was not ready to surrender the child and an older child will not get adopted.

Purender persisted with his efforts and found that the grandmother had not visited Devi or shown interest in her care.

In the meantime, distant relatives insisted on forcing an arranged marriage on Devi. Devi clearly refused and expressed her wish for a better future through education and care.

In March 2024, the grandmother officially surrendered Devi, so she could be declared legally free for adoption by the Child Welfare Committee.
By August 2024, Devi was matched with an adoptive couple and even though she had turned 18, the parents proceeded with the adoption.

After spending more than 11 years in an institution, Devi finally reached a permanent family. Both adoptive parents and Devi required counselling so they could understand each other.

Devi is now living with her adoptive family and continuing her college education.

As always, thanks to all our donors, supporters, and well-wishers – on behalf of the children whose cases we work on, and on behalf of our team.
