WAIC Stories: Ajay’s Story

A Chance Created, A Family Needed

Ajay faced immense hardship from an early age. His father had died of AIDS, and both he and his mother were HIV positive. In 2022, when Ajay was 12, he lost his mother as well. His stepfather was in jail for abuse, so Ajay was admitted to a children’s shelter for HIV positive boys. No relatives came forward to care for him.

In March 2024, Kamlesh from WAIC started digitizing the records at Ajay’s shelter and Ajay got flagged for adoption. Ajay’s case was categorized as “abandoned” and Kamlesh, in coordination with the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), initiated the steps to make Ajay legally adoptable.

As per due process, Kamlesh tried to trace Ajay’s biological relatives via police and newspaper publications but no one came forward. Kamlesh persistently followed-up with the CWC and the shelter staff until Ajay was officially declared legally free for adoption in July 2025.

Today, Ajay has something he did not have before: a real chance to be part of a family. His future now depends on prospective parents opening their hearts and home to him. Children living with HIV can and do get adopted. But we still need more parents to step up, so kids like Ajay are not left waiting.

As always, thanks to all our donors, supporters, and well-wishers – on behalf of the children whose cases we work on, and on behalf of our team.
