Teenage siblings find their “Forever Home”
Ankita and Nikhil had a story similar to many vulnerable children – missing parents, incapable relatives, and years of living in a shelter. This was not the life they wanted. In May 2023, when Amit Deshmukh from WAIC visited their shelter and took up Ankita and Nikhil’s case, the children immediately started dreaming of a different life with a loving family.
As Amit worked on the case, Ankita would frequently ask him about updates. Amit would reassure her that he is diligently working on the case, while quietly hoping that the right family will adopt the children once they become legally adoptable. Through Amit’s efforts, both siblings were legally declared free for adoption in March 2024. At the time, Ankita was 15 and Nikhil was 13 years old.
Since teenage adoption is still rare in India, the children had to wait two more years. Finally, in July 2026, a loving couple adopted both Ankita (17) and Nikhil (15). The adoptive parents believed that every child deserves a permanent family, which motivated them to proceed with adopting teenage siblings.
